Adoption for Dogs
Animal shelters and rescue groups provide adoption for dogs. Both offer guidance and support for those looking to adopt a dog into their family.
-
Significance
-
According to the Humane Society of the United States, there are 5 million to 7 million animals taken to shelters each year. Of those numbers, 60 percent of the dogs have to be put down. There are over 170 breed-specific rescue groups listed on the American Kennel Club website. Rescue groups have local chapters located across the United States.

Considerations
-
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that the average annual cost to take care of a small dog is well over $1,000, and the average cost to take care of a large dog is even higher.
Health
-
A reputable shelter or rescue group provides a veterinarian report for each dog available for adoption. The report indicates any current or potential health problems of the dog.
Registration
-
Most cities require that dogs be registered with the Animal Control department. This registration is usually updated at your dog's annual vet visit.
Training
-
PetSmart offers six different types of training classes for dogs of all ages. The classes are taught by accredited instructors.
