What Is the Etiquette for Displaying the American Flag?

The American flag is a symbol of our country and of patriotism to our country. Because it represents the nation, it is considered a living thing and should be treated with respect at all times.

  1. How Not to Use

    • Advertising with the American flag is not allowed. It should not be added to anything that will be later thrown away. It is not to be used for speaking podiums or drapery in any other form.

    Displaying Indoors

    • If the flag is displayed on a wall, the stars should always be at the top and on the flag's right, whether the flag is horizontal or vertical.

    Displaying Outdoors

    • When flown with flags from other nations, all flags must be on separate poles of the same height. When flown with state flags or the flags of organizations or communities, the American flag must be higher than other flags.

    Half Staff

    • When flown at half staff, the flag should be first raised to the top of the pole before being lowered to half staff.

    Disposal

    • Flags can be repaired and cleaned when needed but when that is no longer possible, proper disposal must be done by burning. The American Legion, Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts can be contacted to do proper flag-burning ceremonies.
