Effect of Well Water on Teeth

Most people consider brushing and flossing their teeth regularly as the only steps necessary for maintaining good dental health. While it is very important to floss and brush your teeth on a regular basis, there are other elements that affect our dental hygiene. The consumption of well water is one such element.

  1. Fluoride Positive Effect

    • One of the positive things found in well water is fluoride. Fluoride is one of the earth's natural minerals found in rock and soil. This mineral helps strengthen tooth enamel. When tooth enamel is weakened and broken down your teeth become very sensitive, which can be painful.

    Fluoride Negative Effect

    • While some fluoride is good, be aware that if too much fluoride is present, it can cause discoloration of your teeth, a condition known as dental fluorosis. While fluorosis is not a health risk, it can be unattractive and need to be addressed. Also, in rare cases, it can require treatment from a dentist if the teeth become pitted.

    Testing

    • By having your well water tested, you will know the level of fluoride found in your drinking water. The testing can be done once every three years by purchasing a well-water test kit from your local health department.

    Fluoride Levels

    • The appropriate level for fluoride in well water is between .7mg and 1.2mg per liter.

    Treatment

    • If the fluoride level is high, you can use a reverse osmosis system as fluoride is not removable by other filtering systems. Your other option is to make the switch to bottled water.
