XBox 360 VGA Cable Vs. Component

Microsoft's XBox 360 can output its display signal to both SD and HD displays. There are a variety of cables and connectors to use when hooking up your XBox: VGA "composite" cables, component cables or HDMI.

  1. XBox Features

    • To take full advantage of your XBox 360's display capabilities, an HDTV is required. If you have an XBox made prior to 2006, you will not be able to use an HDMI output. You can change your display settings from the XBox dashboard.

    Composite Cables

    • The composite cables are for SD resolutions and are colored yellow (video), red and white (audio). On the official Microsoft cables, there is a toggle switch for SD mode.

    Component Cables

    • The component cables are for HD resolutions and are colored green, blue, red (video), white and a lighter shade of red (audio). There is a toggle switch on the official XBox cables for "HDTV." Note that component cables only support 720p resolution.

    HDMI Cable

    • While not originally packaged with the XBox, it can use an HDMI cable to display 1080p content with a compatible display. The HDMI cable carries both video and audio and has no color coding. There is no physical switch for an HDMI cable and 1080p mode must be enabled from within the XBox.

    SDTV vs. HDTV

    • XBox games are designed to be played on HDTVs and as such, text and smaller graphics will be difficult to read and see in standard definition. If possible, upgrade to an HDTV to get the most out of your XBox 360.
