Types of Hair Relaxers

Hair relaxing is a major part of the hair industry. Some relaxers are more damaging and dangerous than others, and some are used for different purposes, such as for hair straightening or hair softening. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Types

    • Chemical hair straighteners, better know as relaxers, are used to straighten hair and eliminate curls. There are three main types of relaxers: sodium hydroxide, guanidine hydroxide and ammonium thioglycolate.

    Sodium Hydroxide

    • Sodium hydroxide is the most effective method, but also the most potentially damaging, out of the three types. It has a pH of 10 to 14. Sodium hydroxide softens hair fibers while giving hair more body.

    Guanidine Hydroxide

    • Guanidine hydroxide relaxers are milder and are referred to as "no-lye" because they are less damaging than sodium hydroxide relaxers. This type of relaxer requires conditioning the hair before and after the procedure, and has a pH of 9 to 9.5.

    Ammonium Thioglycolate

    • Ammonium thioglycolate is much less damaging than sodium hydroxide and guanidine hydroxide. These relaxers come in cream or gel form.

    Popular Brands

    • Some popular relaxer brands include Revlon Fabulaxer No-Lye, Optimum, African Pride No-Lye, Luster's Pink Conditioning and Dr. Miracles No-Lye relaxers.
