Homemade Window Cleaning Solution With Ammonia

Homemade ammonia cleaners are easy to make, less toxic, and definitely more economical. Ammonia cleans windows without the streaking that commonly occurs when using vinegar and water alone. Sometimes a little added liquid dish detergent is necessary to cut through the dirt and residue left behind by commercial cleaners. The following ammonia recipes will leave your windows clean and streak free. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. 1. Gallon Mixture

    • 1/2 cup ammonia
      1 cup vinegar
      1 teaspoon liquid dish detergent
Add water to make 1 gallon of window cleaner

    2. Gallon Mixture

    • For a more intense cleaning

      1/2 cup ammonia
2 cups rubbing alcohol 70% isopropyl
      1 teaspoon liquid dish detergent
Add water to make 1 gallon of window cleaner

    To clean the windows

    • Spray the windows with your homemade window cleaner solution. Instead of using paper towels, save money by using a piece crumpled newspaper to prevent streaking and to give the glass a polished look. To keep the cleaner from drying too quickly avoid cleaning your windows when the sun is shining directly on them.

    Storage and Caution

    • Use reusable spray bottles for storing the cleaner. Label the bottles with ingredients and always keep out of reach of children. Taken internally, rubbing alcohol and ammonia are poisons.

    Tip

    • Clean the bath tub with baking soda and liquid dish soap. Sprinkle baking soda on the tub, add a squirt of liquid dish detergent and scrub with a sponge. Rinse well.
