Postal Regulations for Curbside Mailboxes
Regulations are set and enforced by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to ensure that mail carriers remain safe while delivering mail. If you want to move your mailbox from its current location, you must send in a request for approval to the USPS.
-
Location
-
Your mailbox must be on the right-hand side of the road along the line of your mail delivery person's route. If the driver has to drive on the left side of the road to deliver your mail, he becomes a hazard to other drivers.
Distance
-
The door of your mailbox must be at least six inches away from the road to ensure that the driver can drive past your mailbox without hitting it. More than eight inches away is not recommended as it may be inconvenient for your carrier to reach your mailbox without getting out of her vehicle.
-
Height
-
Your mailbox must stand at least 41 inches above ground level, although it should not exceed 45 inches. Names or address numbers on mailboxes must be at least 1-inch tall. This allows your mail carrier to see it from his vehicle.
Maintenance
-
You are responsible for keeping the area between your mailbox door and the road clear of overgrown grass, garbage and other debris that obstruct the path and which may delay the delivery of your mail.
Miscellaneous
-
A custom-made mailbox is permitted as long as it has been approved by the USPS. If you employ locks on your mailbox, the lock must be one that has also been approved by the USPS.
