Camoquin Side Effects

Camoquin is a prescription medication sometimes called by its generic name Amodiaquine Hydrochloride. Despite its effectiveness for treating and preventing malaria, Camoquin poses a risk for side effects in some patients.

  1. Significance

    • Side effects of Camoquin tend to be more severe when taken for the prevention of malaria, and because of this, doctors rarely prescribe the drug for this purpose although it is effective.

    Types of Side Effects

    • Possible side effects of Camoquin include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, vertigo, lethargy, abdominal pain, headaches, increased sensitivity to the sun, double or blurred vision and a blue discoloration of your finger nails.

    Time Frame

    • The effects of Camoquin diminish slowly, persisting even after use of the drug is discontinued, according to IPCA Laboratories.

    Risks

    • In some patients, Camoquin causes neutropenia or anemia, deficiencies of white and red blood cells, respectively. Liver damage is also possible while taking Camoquin.

    Considerations

    • Because of its potential side effects, doctors restrict use of the drug in alcoholics, women who are pregnant or nursing and those with a history of cirrhosis, hepatitis, or liver disease, using the drug only when there is no safe alternative available.
