What Are the Main Causes of Burnout Stress for School Counselors?

Multiple factors contribute to the stress level of school counselors. First-time counselors that receive more training and support tend to have an easier adjustment period before settling into their occupation. Understanding the role of the counselor in the particular school environment also reduces the chance of increased stress. There are many possible causes of burnout.

  1. Caseload

    • Having to choose one student over another can cause stress.

A large and seemingly impossible caseload causes increased stress for the school counselor. Having to choose between cases because of time constraints seems unfair to counselors and often creates negative feelings.

    School Location

    • Schools in low-income neighborhoods are difficult environments for school counselors.

The location of the school and its socioeconomic status often have an effect on the burnout rates of counselors. Poverty-stricken neighborhoods might have uninvolved parents and children with difficult issues, thereby making the counselor's job more stressful.

    Role Stress

    • Counselors without purpose easily burn out.

Counselors that feel out of place or unfulfilled become easily exhausted. Understanding the needs of a particular school and finding use for skills learned during formal training reduces burnout.

    Level of Support

    • School counselors with peer support have lower stress levels.

The burnout rate increases significantly when school counselors feel isolated and lacks the support of staff.

    Training

    • Regular trainings reduce the burnout rates of counselors.

A school counselor that feels confident in his ability has a lower chance or burning out by feeling overwhelmed. Regular trainings keep counselors educated and well-informed.
