What Is the Care of Miniature Violets?
Miniature violets are a smaller version of the standard sized African violets. These popular houseplants grow to only 6 inches in diameter. Their care is similar to that of the larger standard violets, but miniature can be a little harder with which to work. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Light
-
Miniature violets need strong light to grow. Place them within one foot of a window without curtains. They prefer morning sun or cooler winter sun rather than very hot sun. You may need to experiment to find the perfect window for your violets.
Water
-
Water when the soil is dry to the touch. Violet plants prefer soil that is moist but not soggy.
-
Temperature
-
Miniature violets will grow best when temperatures stay between 65 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit. They will have larger, longer-lasting blooms when the humidity stays above 40 percent.
Space
-
To keep miniature violets small, make sure they have enough space to grow. You should be able to turn a pot all the way around without the leaves touching any other plants.
Fertilizer
-
Fertilize your miniatures with a product made especially for African violets for better growth and blooming. Follow the package directions or dilute the fertilizer to a quarter of its normal strength and use it each time you water.
Pruning
-
Miniature violets need to be pruned more often than standards, or they will get too big. Remove any yellowing leaves and any extra foliage frequently.
