Fibroid tumors, which are also called uterine fibroids, leiomyomas, fibromyomas or myomas, are benign, non-cancerous growths. They typically develop in the smooth muscle tissue of the uterine wall. There are a number of cures that can treat fibroid tumors.

    Significance

  1. According to the Center for Uterine Fibroids (CUF), fibroid tumors are the most common type of solid pelvic tumor in women. While fibroids often do not cause any symptoms or require treatment, the CUF estimates that fibroids become symptomatic in approximately 25 percent of women who are of reproductive age.
  2. Expert Insight

  3. According to the Mayo Clinic, in a large majority of cases, the best cure for fibroid tumors is "watchful waiting." This is a medical approach where no treatment is administered until the fibroids actually cause symptoms. Symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain and pressure and frequently urinating.
  4. Types

  5. There are a number of conventional and traditional alternative cures that can be used to shrink or remove fibroid tumors.
  6. Conventional Cures

  7. Some of the conventional cures for fibroid tumors include pharmaceutical drugs such as gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRHa), surgical procedures such as a hysterectomy or myomectomy, as well as non-invasive procedures that include myolysis, endometrial ablation and focused ultrasound surgery.
  8. Traditional Folk Remedies

  9. Fibroids have traditionally been treated with natural cures, which include herbal formulations and homeopathic remedies (Resource 3). These are often prepared from medicinal herbs such as red clover, Mexican wild yam, poke root and chasteberry.
  10. Misconceptions

  11. Fibroids may wrongly be associated with increased risk of uterine cancer. But according to the Mayo Clinic, fibroids are non-cancerous growths that rarely develop into cancer.
