What Are Common Bladder Problems?

Bladder stones, overactive bladder and chronic bladder infection are the most common bladder problems.

  1. Function

    • Bladder stones are minerals that build up in the bladder. Overactive bladder is the urge to urinate more frequently than usual. Chronic bladder infections occur when the bladder becomes infected repeatedly.

    Identification

    • Multiple infections in the bladder within a six-month period are considered chronic; symptoms are abdominal pain, trouble urinating and painful urination. Overactive bladder iinvolves the urge to urinate more often than usual when not pregnant. Symptoms of bladder stones include trouble urinating, painful urination, blood in the urine and abdominal pain.

    Considerations

    • Untreated bladder stones can cause nerve damage and difficulty urinating. Overactive bladder, while not dangerous, is inconvenient. Chronic bladder infections can indicate underlying conditions such as kidney stones or bacteria buildup in the urinary tract.

    Treatment

    • Each condition can be treated with medications, such as antibiotics for infections. Bladder stones usually pass with time. Medication to stop the frequent urge to urinate is used for an overactive bladder. Doctors may also give medication to reduce pain while urinating.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Prevent bladder infections by drinking plenty of healthy liquids, such as water and cranberry juice. To reduce your chances of overactive bladder, avoid caffeine, alcohol and certain medications. Urinating when you need to and avoiding unhealthy drinks like sodas can help prevent bladder stones.
