Itchy Hands & Feet Symptoms

Itchy hands and feet are often due to allergic reactions, bacteria or fungus. Most causes of itchy hands and feet are relatively harmless, but a physician should be consulted to rule out complications and begin treatment.

Allergies

An allergic reaction to outside agents such as chemicals, insect bites, plants and animals, or even clothing may cause itchy hands or feet. Certain medications or foods may also cause an allergic reaction.

Dyshidrosis

Dyshidrosis is a skin condition that causes an itchy rash on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet. In severe cases, cracked skin and blistering may occur. Corticosteroids may be prescribed as treatment.

Eczema

Eczema, also called dermatitis, is a common skin ailment that causes itching, swelling and redness. Prescription creams may help relieve symptoms and promote healing.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body, including the hands and feet. Red scaly skin, itching and painful joints are symptoms of psoriasis.

Keratolysis

Keratolysis is a bacterial infection that affects the soles of the feet and palms of the hands. Excessive sweating and tight-fitting clothing may exacerbate the condition and anti-bacterial medication is often used for treatment.

Athlete's Foot

Athlete's foot usually affects the feet and toes, but in some cases the fungus can spread to the hands. This can cause itching, redness, blisters and peeling skin. Anti-fungal medication will usually clear up athlete's foot.
