What Kind of Tent Stakes Can Be Used for Gravel?

Tent stakes are used to provide a secure foundation, even in wind. The best ones hold not only in soft soil but also the gravel of a campground or riverbank.

  1. Types

    • There are several types of tent stakes. The most common are plastic, aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel and titanium.

    Lightweight Stakes

    • Plastic and mild steel are both lightweight stakes used mostly in soft soil. Plastic tends to break, and mild steel will bend if used in gravel.

    Stainless Steel

    • Stainless steel stakes are good for using in gravel as they are very durable and rust-resistant.

    Titanium

    • Titanium stakes are lightweight and strong, won't rust and will probably outlast your tent. It is best to avoid the wire type, however. The main drawback to these is the price.

    Aluminum

    • Aluminum stakes are strong, will not rust and come in a variety of weights. Heavy-duty aluminum is the best.

    Considerations

    • Heavy-duty aluminum stakes, preferably in a "Y" shape, are the best value overall. These should hold up to gravel without trouble, are easily replaceable and won't break the budget.
