The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has requirements for the kind of mailbox used, whether it can be locked and the side of the road it must be placed on. The USPS also has requirements for the required height of the mailbox.

According to the USPS website, the residential mailbox must be 41 to 45 inches when measured from the bottom of the mailbox to the road surface.
Exceptions

Exceptions to the 41-to-45 inch requirement include conditions of the road or curb that would make it impossible for correct placement. If this is the case, it is necessary to contact the local post office to make arrangements for an alternate but acceptable installation.
Considerations

The rural mailbox must also be placed the correct distance from the road. The USPS website instructs that the mailbox should be installed 6 to 8 inches from the edge of the curb or road to the front of the mailbox door.
