What is the File Extension SEA?
A SEA file, or self-extracting archive, is a compressed file created by StuffIt Deluxe. The SEA file format is used to send a file to other users and does not require special software to open.

HIstory
-
Raymond Lau created the first version of StuffIt software in 1987. It was quickly adopted as a compression standard by Macintosh users, but was not available for Windows until the 1990s.
Changing Hands
-
Originally, Raymond Lau marketed StuffIt Software as shareware until 1989 when he sold it to Aladdin Software, who later become Allume Systems Inc. Currently, the software is owned by Smith Micro Software.
-
Differences Between SIT, SITX and SEA
-
Files compressed with the SIT or SITX extension require StuffIt Expander or StuffIt Deluxe to open. Folders or files compressed in SEA format do not require any additional software except in Mac OS X.
Problems with Mac OS X
-
SEA files created in Mac OS 9 or above may not automatically decompress in Mac OS X without software such as StuffIt Expander, DiskDoubler or Compact Pro.
How to Decompress
-
If you have an SEA file that will not decompress on its own, you need to either purchase or download a demo of StuffIt Expander from Smith Micro Software.
