Bald Cypress Tree Information

A rare deciduous member of the cypress family, the bald cypress tree lives in swamps and other wet environments. It is also known as the swamp cypress and is native to the southeastern United States. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Description

    • A typical bald cypress tree grows from 75 feet to 120 feet tall. The gray-brown or red-brown bark is wrinkled, and the feathery, needle-like leaves are arranged on tiny branches. The cones grow green and ripen to brown; leaves turn red-brown in the fall.

    Family

    • The bald cypress tree, known by the scientific name Taxodium distichumis, is part of the Taxodiaceae genus, in the larger Cupressaceae family. Its cousins are the pond cypress and the Montezuma bald cypress.

    Environment

    • The bald cypress tree grows in an area that spans from Delaware to Florida and as far west as East Texas. It prefers humid climates with high rainfall.

    Uses

    • The bald cypress tree, which is the state tree of Louisiana, is grown as an ornamental tree and for it water-resistant wood. In nature, it provides shelter and food for wildlife, including migrating Florida cranes and deer.

    Fun Facts

    • According to the Native Tree Society, the tallest bald cypress tree is in Carter's Grove, Va., and is about 144 feet tall. The bald cypress has cone-shaped "knees," or pneumatophores, which are root extensions that give the tree oxygen when flooded.
