Important Facts About the National Anthem

The U.S. national anthem--also known as "The Star-Spangled Banner"--has a history dating back to 1814 and a particular set of customs associated with it.

  1. Origins

    • The lyrics to the national anthem were originally written in 1814 as a poem called "The Defence of Fort McHenry" by Francis Scott Key. Key had witnessed the bombing of Fort McHenry in the War of 1812 between the U.S. and the British Empire.

    Features

    • Francis Scott Key suggested that his words be sung to the tune of "Anacreon in Heaven"--a popular British song.

    History

    • The first recorded public performance of the words and music together took place in Baltimore on October 19, 1814. A music store then published the words and music under the title "The Star-Spangled Banner."

    Time Frame

    • After many prior attempts, a bill making "The Star Spangled Banner" the U.S. national anthem was passed and made law on March 3, 1931.

    Customs

    • U.S. Code, 36 U.S.C. § 301 states that during a rendition of the anthem, all present must face the flag with the right hand over heart. men should remove their headdress with the right hand and hold it over the left shoulder and uniformed persons should give the military salute.
