Uterine fibroids---also known as leiomyomas or myomas---are non-cancerous growths that develop in the walls of a woman's uterus, and can be treated with conventional and alternative remedies.

    Significance

  1. The Mayo Clinic estimates that uterine fibroids affect as many as three out of every four women during their childbearing years.
  2. Expert Insight

  3. According to Carolyn DeMarco, M.D., fibroids usually don't cause symptoms. Some women, however, report heavy bleeding, frequent urination, pelvic pressure and pain.
  4. Risks

  5. Left untreated, symptomatic fibroid tumors may cause infertility and miscarriage. Prolonged, heavy bleeding may also result in anemia.
  6. Prevention/Solution

  7. While there is little clinical evidence on what can prevent uterine fibroids, conventional and alternative treatments can be used to cure them.
  8. Types

  9. Conventional treatments include surgery, pharmaceutical drugs and laser therapy. A natural practitioner may suggest hormone creams, such as natural progesterone cream, herbal teas, dietary changes or homeopathy, which combines stress-relief techniques with herbal preparations.
  10. Warning

  11. Further clinical research is required to prove the effectiveness of natural cures in the treatment of uterine fibroids. Consult with your doctor or other licensed health-care provider before using alternative treatments.
