What Is the Fastest Growing Hedge?

Many gardeners and landscapers prefer to use hedges rather than fencing for aesthetic reasons. A nicely grown and trimmed hedge can add dramatically to your home perimeter's "look" without detracting from the environment.

Siberian Elm

  • According to English Gardens, this elm is the fastest growing hedge. It is also one of the first to leaf in the spring and the last to go to sleep in the autumn.

Silky Dogwood

  • One of the hallmarks of the silky dogwood is its clusters of white flowers in spring and colorful white and blue fruit during autumn. Height when mature is up to 12 feet, and width at maturity is six to nine feet.

Thuja Green Giant

  • One of the fastest growing evergreen hedges, Thuja Green Giant will grow at a rate of three to five feet per year once it has taken root. This evergreen tends to grow in uniform height and shape.

Canadian Hemlock

  • This evergreen is one of the fastest growing hedges. According to the Arbor Day Foundation, this tree will reach almost 6 feet tall at maturity.

Norway Spruce

  • One of the fastest growing, this dark green spruce makes an excellent hedge or windbreak, and grows up to five feet tall at maturity.
