Have you ever worked for hours on a hand-made quilt, only to find that you made it too small for your queen size bed? Knowing the accurate measurements for each size will save a lot of time in the long run.

  1. Choosing a quilt size does not need to be difficult.

  2. Mattress Size

  3. A standard queen size mattress is 60 inches by 80 inches. To determine the quilt size, take the mattress measurement and add preferred side drop length to the width, and pillow tuck length to the length.
  4. Quilt Size

  5. With a standard 12-inch drop over the edge of the mattress and a 10-inch pillow tuck, a queen size quilt measurement should be at least 84 inches by 102 inches.
  6. Material Measurements--Batting

  7. To make a queen size quilt, you will need a standard 90-inch-by-108-inch roll of batting. If you are making a queen size quilt with a very long drop, or deep tuck, you may need a 120-inch-by-120-inch roll.
  8. Material Measurements--Backing and Binding

  9. A queen size quilt calls for seven to eight yards of backing fabric. Better Homes and Gardens gives a general formula to determine the exact amount needed. Take the length of your quilt top in inches, multiply by three, add 18 and divide by 36. This will give you the answer in yards. Your binding measurement will be equal to the perimeter of your quilt, plus 18 inches for security.
  10. Material Measurements--Quilt Blocks

  11. If using standard 12-inch square quilt blocks, you will need from 35 to 48 quilt blocks, depending on the exact size of your quilt and the width of your border strips.
