What's a Daybed?

Daybeds have grown in popularity as people have looked for ways to make their furnishings multifunctional. The daybed meets this criteria as it serves a dueling sitting/sleeping role for the bedroom.

Definition

A daybed is essentially a couch with no arms and a frame, functioning as a place to sit during the day and a regular bed at night.

Frames

The frame of a daybed is split into three components: the two side pieces and one large back panel. Frame materials can include metal, wood or a combination of the two. Daybed frames are generally built to fit a twin-size mattress.

Daybed Covers

Daybed covers are different from more traditional bedding. Instead of a large blanket or comforter, the fabric of daybed covers lays atop the mattress, draping down to the floor on three of the four sides.

Link Springs

Instead of the traditional box spring, daybeds have link springs, which attach to the side panels of the bed. This creates a structure similar to a grid to offer a strong, viable substitute for a box spring.

Trundles

Many daybeds have a trundle feature. This preserves the couch appearance during the day, but allows you to pull a lever, which releases a bed on wheels that slides out and pops up from underneath the daybed for sleeping purposes.
