What Are the Benefits of High School Security Cameras?

Largely in response to the rise in school shootings, many high schools are considering (or have already added) security cameras as an added precaution. While some drawbacks may exist, such as initial set-up costs and concerns over privacy rights, there are several advantageous factors that influence a school's decision to add surveillance cameras.

  1. Prevent Prohibited Behavior

    • Surveillance cameras are often a deterrent for forbidden behaviors like vandalism or theft. Other behaviors that may have previously escaped the eyes of school administrators, like smoking or drug use, are also caught on tape.

    Stop Unwanted Visitors

    • Cameras at each entrance and exit of a school building can help staff monitor the visitors who come in and out of the building.

    Save Money

    • School security employees can often work more efficiently with the aid of surveillance cameras. Fewer employees can visually patrol a larger area when several cameras are in use.

    Proof Positive

    • Not only do security cameras catch criminals or rebellious students in the act, it also provides the school with proof of such an incident. In serious cases involving the police, the video evidence can help identify offenders.

    Added Safety Measures

    • Many school have combined security cameras with other safety precautions like ID scanning of all visitors and metal detectors at every entrance to the school. Many facilities are now locked during school hours to prevent easy access to the building.
