Partial Removable Dental Bridges

Partial removable dental bridges, or removable partial dentures, are a form of false teeth that are connected to an underlying support framework. They are commonly used to replace either a single tooth or neighboring missing teeth.

The Facts

Removable partials are attached to surrounding healthy teeth through use of metal clasps or nearly invisible custom attachments. Crowns (artificial caps) are frequently attached to normal teeth to provide a better fit for the partial bridge.

Types

Removable partials are available in all-plastic forms and forms that combine a metal base with plastic designed to look like natural gum material.

Function

Removable partial bridges allow individuals with tooth loss to maintain their normal biting and chewing functions. They are typically worn during the day, then cleaned and stored in soaking solution at night.

Considerations

Gums and their underlying bone naturally change shape over time. Removable partials may need to be adjusted periodically to match these changes and provide a continuing proper fit.

Warning

Failure to properly maintain removable partials can result in damage to their structure or poor fit inside the mouth. Poor fit can lead to sores or infection.
