Feline Thyroid Disease

Thyroid disease, most commonly referred to as hyperthyroidism, is common in older cats but can occur in cats of any age. It is the most common disease affecting the thyroid gland in cats.

  1. About the Thyroid

    • The thyroid gland is located in the neck of the cat and produces hormones that control the cat's metabolism as well as other systems in the body.

    Feline Hyperthyroidism

    • Hyperthyroidism in cats is a condition in which the thyroid gland is producing an excessive amount of thyroid hormones including thyroxine and triiodothyronine. It is often caused by tumors or adenomas growing in the thyroids, but only one to two percent are cancerous.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of thyroid disease include weight loss, vomiting, behavioral changes and increased appetite. Less common symptoms include weakness, diarrhea, loss of appetite and decreased levels of activity (lethargy).

    Treatment

    • Treatment will vary based on the individual cat's needs. Common treatments include anti-thyroid drugs (methimazole), treatment with radioactive iodine and surgical removal of the gland.

    Hypothyroidism

    • Hypothyroidism is another condition affecting the thyroid gland, but it is extremely rare. Most cats who develop hypothyroidism do so because of treatment for hyperthyroidism, such as removal of the thyroid gland.
