What Are the Causes of Blisters on the Ears?

Save

There are three main parts to the ear: the outer, the middle and the inner. If any of these parts becomes infected, various symptoms and complaints can arise. Bacteria, fungus, viruses, and other conditions can lead to blisters on the ears.

Infections

  • When an ear becomes infected, symptoms and the degree of symptoms will vary depending on the cause. Ear infections can cause itching and blisters to form on the outer ear and or in the ear canal.

Causes of Infections

  • Young children are more prone to ear infections. Changes in ear pressure, water lodged in the ears, respiratory infections, a cleft palate or improper use of Q-tips can all lead to infections and blisters.

Shingles

  • Shingles, a viral infection that causes rashes and blisters, may be the cause of blisters on the ears. A band of blisters on the chest and the spine are the first signs of the painful condition.

Sunburn and Skin Cancer

  • Many people forget to apply sunscreen to the ears although they are heavily exposed to sun and susceptible to sunburn. Skin cancer can occur on the outer ears and a blistering cluster may be the first sign

Ramsey Hunt Syndrome

  • Ramsey Hunt Syndrome, similar to Bell's Palsy, is a condition in which facial nerves become infected with a virus and paralysis effects the face. It can be diagnosed by blisters on the ears. The blisters are painful and may be visible, or they can be hard to detect if too far in the ear canal.

Skin Disorders

  • Psoriasis, eczema and dry skin can cause blisters on the outer and middle ears. All can appear on any part of the part and cause itching, rough red patches and blisters.
