Grants for Elementary Schools

Many foundations recognize the important foundation laid by elementary education and provide grants to support high-quality education. These grants fund a variety of projects both in and out of the classroom; they also allow teachers to incorporate innovative ideas.

  1. Types

    • Some grants--such as the Lowe's Toolbox for Education grants--go to the elementary school as a whole. Target Field Trip Grants are for individual classrooms and programs.

    Extracurriculars

    • Some elementary grants go to programs outside the classroom. For instance, Dollar General Back-To-School grants are for school library equipment, while Carol M. White Physical Education Program grants go to physical education and fitness programs.

    Sources

    • Many corporate foundations--such as Lego and Honda--support elementary education through grants. Another great source is the National Education Association Foundation, which grants the Books Across America program for schools working with under served students.

    Green

    • A popular area of funding among elementary school grants is environmental, or "green," projects. Discovery Education and General Motors host a Live Green grant for teachers, and Lowe's provides grants for outdoor classrooms.

    Geography

    • Many state departments of education provide grants to local education agencies or schools within their particular states. For instance, many states--including Indiana and Georgia--are using federal funding to provide learning technology grants to local schools.
