When to Stop Heparin?

Heparin is a medication that is used to thin the blood and prevent the formation of blood clots. Your doctor may advise you to stop taking heparin if signs of excessive bleeding occur. Heparin is available only by injection or IV.

Women who are over the age of 60 may be more at risk for excessive bleeding and adverse reactions from heparin. Heparin should be stopped immediately if she experiences signs of bleeding or hemorrhage.
