When to Stop Heparin?

Heparin is a medication that is used to thin the blood and prevent the formation of blood clots. Your doctor may advise you to stop taking heparin if signs of excessive bleeding occur. Heparin is available only by injection or IV.

  1. Identification

    • Blood tests can determine if heparin is working effectively to prevent blood clots. If test show clotting factors are not in normal range, your doctor may want to stop the heparin because the blood may be too thin and cause bleeding.

    Benefits

    • Excessive bleeding can be caused by heparin therapy. Stopping it may prevent this life-threatening adverse reaction.

    Misconceptions

    • Many individuals believe that once heparin therapy is started it cannot be stopped. If signs of excessive bleeding occur, heparin therapy is almost always stopped and alternative treatments are employed.

    Time Frame

    • If you notice signs of unusual bleeding, such as blood in the stool or urine, bloody nose, excessive bruising, bleeding gums or excessive bleeding from a cut, call your physician immediately. Shortness of breath or rapid heart rate can indicate signs of anemia from internal bleeding, which is a medical emergency that needs prompt intervention.

    Theories/Speculation

    • Women who are over the age of 60 may be more at risk for excessive bleeding and adverse reactions from heparin. Heparin should be stopped immediately if she experiences signs of bleeding or hemorrhage.
