What Are Immunizations' Side Effects?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, all immunizations are able to cause side effects. Most of the side effects are mild and only last a few days. If pain, fever and other side effects do not improve over time or worsen, the next step is to call your doctor.

  1. Injection Site Discomfort

    • Patients may experience discomfort at and around the injection site, including pain and soreness, itching, swelling and irritation. Keeping the site bandaged and clean can help ease irritation and itching.

    Fever

    • From the influenza vaccine to measles and mumps, a fever is a common side effect of immunizations. It may last a couple days and can be treated with an aspirin-free fever reducer for both children and adults.

    Body Aches

    • Headaches and body or muscle aches are also a common side effect from immunizations. Aches are generally mild and can be treated with ibuprofen.

    Fatigue

    • Tiredness and fatigue may be experienced, especially the day after getting immunized. Getting extra sleep the nights following immunization may help.

    Nausea and Dizziness

    • Some people react to vaccines with nausea or dizziness. Eating and drinking fluids can help with symptoms. If vomiting occurs, contact your doctor.
