Side Effects of Having Permanent Fake Lashes

Creating permanent eyelashes amounts to a hair graft on the edge of the eyelid. Doctors do these grafts for people who have lost their lashes because of injury or disease and those who would like longer or thicker lashes, according to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery.

Before and after

For about a week before each session and up to two weeks afterward, the patient should not take aspirin or other drugs that limit blood clotting. Recovery can take two weeks.

During surgery

Done under a local anesthesia, the process can require one or more sessions that last one to three hours each. Devices hold the eyelids steady to prevent blinking during the grafting.

Right after surgery

The transplants itch, sometimes intensely, for a couple of days. Some doctors suggest that the eyes be bandaged for the first day. Patients should wear goggles while sleeping so they don't rub their eyes.

Difficult complications

The eyelids may become infected. A doctor must treat this immediately to keep the infection from spreading.
The lids may lose their shape in two ways: The lower eyelid falls outward, or the eyelids curl inward, turning the lashes against the eyeball.

Fixable complications

If the patient rubs the eyes, the transplanted hairs might shift. Or the grafts might grow inward. The doctor can fix these problems.
