Serotonin influences the functioning of several body systems, including the cardiovascular, gastrointestinal and immune systems. Serotonin helps to regulate moods, and an imbalance in serotonin levels can result in depression and/or anxiety.

  7. An imbalance of serotonin levels depression, schizophrenia, as well as learning and compulsive disorders. A disruption of serotonin levels can also result in increased aggression.

  9. Serotonin Syndrome is a potentially life-threatening condition that occurs when two drugs are taken at the same time that both affect serotonin by increasing the levels released.

  11. Alcohol, caffeine and cigarette smoking can impair the natural production of serotonin. Health conditions such as diabetes and hypoglycemia as well as a genetic predisposition can also affect serotonin production.
