Side Effects of Tambocor & High Triglycerides

Flecainide acetate, sold under the trade name Tambocor, is used to treat irregular heart rhythms and maintain a normal heart rate. High triglycerides may contribute to the hardening of artery walls and can be a sign of other serious conditions.

  1. Common Side Effects

    • Tambocor commonly causes constipation, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache, skin rash, blurred vision, depression or anxiety.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Tambocor has been shown to actually increase the chance of fatal arrhythmia in patients with structural heart disease such as a history of heart attack or left ventricular dysfunction, as well as patients with ventricular arrhythmia.

    Change of Name

    • Tambocor went off-patent on February 10, 2004, and is now commercially available under the trade names Almartym, Apocard, Ecrinal and Flécaine, as well as being available in generic form.

    Triglycerides

    • Triglycerides are a type of fat found in blood. Calories not used during a meal are turned into triglycerides and burned between meals as energy. When more calories are eaten than burned, the possibility for high triglycerides increases.

    Effects of High Triglycerides

    • High triglycerides may contribute to the hardening or thickening of artery walls, called atherosclerosis, which can increase the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart disease. High triglycerides can often also be a sign of other heart diseases, hypothyroidism, liver or kidney conditions or type 2 diabetes.
