Uses and Side Effects of the Antimalarial Drug Plaquenil

Plaquenil is also by the generic name Hydroxychloroquine sulfate. It is commonly used to treat malaria and rheumatoid arthritis but can be used to treat other conditions. Some users of Plaquenil have reported side effects.

  1. Malaria Treatment Side Effects

    • Side effects experienced by users being treated for malaria are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, dizziness, lack of appetite, heart problems and headache.

    Arthritis Treatment Side Effects

    • Side effects for patients being treated for arthritis include anemia, acne, stomach cramps, blind spots. blisters in mouth and eyes, convulsions, diarrhea, diminished reflexes, hearing loss and liver failure.

    Warnings

    • Plaquenil should be kept away from children as even a small dose can be fatal. Plaquenil should not be taken if you are an alcoholic or have liver or kidney disease.

    Drug Interactions

    • You should consult your doctor before combining Plaquenil with digoxin, cimetidine, aurothioglucose or any drug that is known to cause liver damage.

    Overdose

    • Signs of a Plaquenil overdose are breathing problems, vision problems, heart failure, convulsions, drowsiness and headache. Symptoms usually appear within 30 minutes of overdose.
