What Air Freshener Can I Use With a Parrot?
Parrots are more sensitive to harmful things in the air than people are. When a person decides to keep a pet bird, she needs to know alternative and safer ways in doing everyday things, including what cleaning products, such as air fresheners, to use.
-
Aerosols
-
Febreeze and aerosol air fresheners contain zinc, which can kill a bird. Avoid the use of these products around parrots and other birds.
-
Other Commercial Air Fresheners
-
Plug-in air fresheners and scented hanging air fresheners, such as those used in cars, are also hazardous to parrots and other birds, according to The Bailey Foundation.
Natural And Safe Air Fresheners
-
Though not all natural things are safe, a few items can safely be used around a pet parrot. Orange peels, cloves, cinnamon and even lemon peels can all work as bird-safe air freshener. These substances work best if boiled; just make sure the animals cannot be exposed to the hot concoctions and get burned.
Vinegar
-
When cleaning out a bird's cage, use vinegar to remove soil and odors. Once the vinegar dries, any bad smells go away. Vinegar is safe to use around birds.
Home Recipe
-
Combine one lemon peel, one lime peel and one orange peel with 6 cups of water. Simmer the mixture on the stove for until the fragrance fills the room. Carry the pot throughout the house to disperse the citrus scents.
