Proper care after a hernia repair will help to minimize your discomfort. According to the American College of Surgeons, proper care after a hernia repair surgery will allow the repair procedure to heal properly and minimize the risk of a hernia recurrence.

  3. Your doctor may prescribe prescription medication for the first couple of days then advise you to use over-the-counter pain medication as needed.
  4. Sleeping

  5. Sitting upright or sleeping in a recliner may ease the pain of getting up and down from a lying position for the first couple of nights after the hernia repair.
  6. Lifting

  7. Your doctor may advise you to not perform any lifting for the first two weeks after your hernia repair and to avoid heavy lifting for six to 10 weeks.
  8. Getting Back to Work

  9. In many cases after a hernia repair surgery, you will be able to return to work within one to two weeks. If your job requires you to perform heavy labor, this time frame may be extended.
  10. Prevention

  11. Your doctor may advise you to take preventive measures: avoiding heaving lifting and pulling or pushing of heavy objects. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should stop smoking to minimize coughing and eat a diet high in fiber to avoid constipation.
