Honor Guard Flag Etiquette

The American flag should be displayed and folded properly when carried by an honor guard. There are a few rules of etiquette that must be recognized.

  1. Folds

    • Honor guards fold the American flag using 13 specific folds. Each fold represents one of the 13 original American colonies.

    Sunup

    • The American flag should be raised at sunrise, and it is appropriate for the honor guard to salute it as it is being raised.

    Sundown

    • Unless the American flag is illuminated, it is to be lowered before the sun is set. Care must be taken to not allow the flag to touch the ground once it has been lowered.

    Weather

    • The flag should not be flown during inclement weather, unless it is one that is specifically designed to withstand the elements.

    Reverence

    • The flag must not be dipped as a gesture to any person or a show of respect for any person or group. It must remain upright. A flag may only be flown upside down as a sign of serious distress.
