Geese Life Cycles

Geese are among the largest birds in the wild and often can be seen migrating overhead in large groups. In addition to their unique migration methods, geese are notable for living considerably long lives. On average, geese can have a life expectancy of nearly 25 years. Geese have different stages during their life cycles.

  1. Eggs

    • Geese begin life as eggs. The female lays several eggs in the spring of each year.

    Nests

    • Eggs are kept protected near water in a nest constructed from grass and other natural materials. The female goose keeps the eggs evenly warm until they are ready to hatch.

    Hatching

    • The incubation period for geese eggs is approximately one month. When developed, young geese break out of the shell using their bills.

    Growth

    • Young geese grow quickly under the care of the adults. Most chicks begin to fly between one and two months after hatching.

    Maturity

    • Geese are considered mature when they are 2 years old. Mature geese find a lifelong mate and lay eggs, beginning the cycle again.
