Saxaul trees are important to human and animal survival in the Gobi Desert because they provide water. The tree has a natural water reserve behind its bark, which Gobi Desert natives can harvest. A parasitic plant forms on the roots of the Saxaul tree, and these plants can be harvested and used for medicinal purposes.
