Qualifications for Correctional Officer in Maryland

Being a correctional officer can be an exciting, challenging career. As of 2009, the salary for Maryland state correctional officers ranged from $35,700 to $50,563 a year, depending on experience.

  1. Minimum Qualifications

    • To apply for a position as a correctional officer in Maryland, you must be at least 21 years old and have a high school diploma or GED.

    Testing

    • To take the correctional officer test, you must bring a photo ID. Veterans must bring a copy of their DD-214. You should allow up to five hours to complete this test.

    Training

    • Before you begin training, you must successfully pass a background check, a physical examination and a psychological evaluation. You must also provide proof that you are a U.S. citizen or a resident alien allowed to work in the U.S.

    Selection

    • If you meet the minimum requirements and pass the preliminary testing, you will go on the waiting list. Three categories separate the candidates on the list: best qualified, better qualified and qualified.

    Correctional Officers

    • Maryland correctional officers must be on call 24 hours a day and are subject to random drug testing. If driving is required while on the job, officers must have a valid Maryland driver's license.
