What Are the Dangers of HGH Supplements?

Human growth hormone (HGH) supplements have benefits for certain medical conditions. Some people also take them for non-medical purposes including athletic improvement and anti-aging. Long-term use and high doses of HGH supplements are associated with some severe side effects.

  1. Function

    • HGH is a naturally occurring chemical in the body produced by the pituitary gland. It is essential for growth during childhood, and helps maintain tissues and organs in adulthood as well. Production of HGH begins decreasing in middle age.

    Benefits

    • Supplementation is prescribed for short-term treatment of conditions causing poor growth in youngsters and for adults with HGH deficiencies. It also is beneficial for AIDS and cancer patients because it prevents muscle wasting.

    Risks

    • People taking HGH supplements who do not have HGH deficiency may develop joint pain, high blood pressure, liver stress, glucose intolerance and insulin resistance. Excess HGH also can cause abnormal bone growth (acromegaly), which can shorten lifespan.

    Significance

    • HGH supplementation can lead to formation of antibodies against the hormone, and long-term use can cause the pituitary gland to eventually stop producing HGH altogether.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Avoiding long-term HGH treatment and only taking low doses can decrease the possibility of dangerous side effects.
