Water on the Brain Symptoms

Water on the brain, also called hydrocephalus, is a buildup of fluids in the brain. The buildup often occurs when the normal flow of brain fluids is blocked. This creates pressure in the head that can damage the delicate brain tissues and in some cases cause death.

  1. The Facts

    • Water on the brain symptoms vary depending on the age of the affected person and the severity of the condition.

    Infants

    • Signs of water on the brain in infants can include vomiting, drowsiness, seizures, irritability and delayed development. The head often increases in size and the eyes may appear to focus downward.

    Older Children and Adults

    • Older children and adults may experience nausea, headache, vomiting, fatigue, memory loss, coordination problems and blurred vision.

    Complications

    • Brain damage and physical disabilities are likely to occur if the condition is already advanced at birth.

    Treatment

    • Water on the brain is usually treated by surgically inserting a draining system, called a shunt, into the brain. The shunt directs fluid from the brain to a place where it is better absorbed such as the abdomen or heart.
