What to Expect After a Glycolic Peel

Glycolic peels are non-invasive procedures performed for skin rejuvenation. Administered either at dermatologist's offices or at spas, they are a quick and relatively painless option for achieving smoother-looking, radiant skin.

Procedure

After cleansing the area to be treated, a glycolic acid solution in concentrations between 10 to 30 percent is applied to the skin. The solution is left on for 10 to 15 minutes and then either neutralized with an alkaline solution or washed off with water.

Glycolic peels gently exfoliate the uppermost layers of the skin. By getting rid of dead skin cells, they impart a glow to the skin and diminish the look of fine lines and age spots.

Considerations

Considered superficial peels, a series of six peels in progressively incremental concentrations is suggested for obtaining noticeable results. While commonly used on the face, glycolic peels can also be used on the neck, chest and hands.

Side Effects

Side effects are minimal after a glycolic peel procedure. Some people may experience mild redness and flaking for a few days after a higher-strength peel.

After Care

Doctors advise limiting exposure to the sun for 24 hours after the procedure. Gentle cleansing, moisturizing and application of a broad-spectrum sunscreen is encouraged to speed skin healing.
