Miconazole Nitrate for a Yeast Infection

Miconazole nitrate is an antifungal medication used to treat vaginal yeast infections caused by the fungus candida. It is available in suppositories or vaginal cream, and works by preventing the growth of yeast causing the infection.

Causes

A yeast infection can occur when the vagina becomes more conducive to candida. This can result from wearing tight underwear, wearing underwear made of synthetic material, taking antibiotics, being pregnant or having diabetes.

Symptoms

If you develop a yeast infection, you may experience symptoms of itching, burning and abnormal vaginal discharge.

In clinical studies, as detailed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), cure rates were higher with miconazole nitrate cream compared with the suppository, but not significantly so.

Side Effects

Side effects are uncommon, occurring in 2 percent or fewer of users, as noted by the NIH. They may include include vaginal burning, itching or irritation. Some women have also reported cramping and headaches.
