Titanium Vs. Carbon Fiber Mountain Bikes

Of the many materials used to build mountain bike frames, titanium and carbon fiber are the two most expensive. While both are associated with high quality, their performance differs.

  1. Quality

    • There are different grades of raw materials. To determine the quality of each frame, consider the quality of the raw materials and manufacturing technique. Fewer variations in quality occur in titanium.

    Durability

    • Titanium can withstand extreme abuse without compromising frame strength, although welded joints can crack. Bicycle manufacturers use interwoven fibers covered in epoxy to create carbon fiber mountain bike frames, which can crack on extreme impact.

    Cost

    • Although prices of both carbon fiber and titanium mountain bike frames vary widely, carbon fiber frames are widely manufactured and distributed, which means less costly low-end mountain bikes. High-end bike prices are similar if made by either materials.

    Weight

    • Frame forming techniques used by manufacturers allow the lightest frames to be made from carbon fiber (see Reference 1 below).

    The Ride

    • Every bike rides differently; however, directionally laid carbon fiber provides stiffness for strength and forgiveness to smooth your ride. Titanium allows for a less stiff ride, but those bikes occasionally create a whipping motion from side to side.
