TiVo vs. DVR

TiVo, and other similar Digital Video Recorders, allow users to record TV shows in order to watch them on demand after they have aired. You can also pause, rewind and fast forward live TV with TiVo or any other brand of DVR.

  1. Considerations

    • You can buy a non-TiVo DVR, but most people who use a non-TiVo DVR rent them from their cable or satellite TV provider.

    Cost

    • A TiVo DVR can cost anywhere from $80 for a refurbished model to $600 for top-of-the-line model. A DVR rented from a TV provider will typically cost $10 to $20 a month.

    Service

    • When you purchase a TiVo Digital Video Recorder, you must also purchase TiVo service, which can cost up to $12.95 a month, depending on the length of your contract. Cable and satellite providers typically do not charge an extra DVR service fee.

    Features

    • Both TiVo and most other major brands offer customers the option of upgrading to an HD DVR, which allows you to record High Definition TV.

    Moving

    • If you rent a DVR from a TV provider, you may have to return the DVR when you move, and lose all your recordings in the process. If you purchase a TiVo DVR, you can take it wherever you go.
