Files ending with the suffix QTX are extensions and helper files for Apple Computer's QuickTime application. QuickTime is an audio and video player and serves as the backbone of Apple's iTunes software.

    Significance

  1. The QTX file refers to software extensions related to the application's ability to interpret the media files presented to it. These files, called codecs, are encoders and decoders of digital files.
  2. Location

  3. QuickTime codecs and extensions are located and are part of the system files in Windows. The path to these files is C:\Windows\system32\QTComponents. On a Macintosh computer. QuickTime files are stored in the computer's library--Macintosh HD/Library/Quicktime.
  4. Identification

  5. QTX files contain data forks, or computer resource files, which direct the operation of the software. Files ending in .qtx contain Windows language so that files can cross operating systems (from Windows to Macintosh). Files ending with .qtr handle the Macintosh to Windows translation.
  6. Features

  7. When installed on a computer, QuickTime comes with a set of codecs that read most, if not all, types of video files. When downloaded, the plug-ins and extensions can increase the depth and breadth of video files it can open. When the files are installed to the computer, the QTX files are updated with new settings and information.
  8. Effects

  9. Users who purchase QuickTime Pro can convert video files to different formats and for use on other devices. The QTX files are utilized to embed the new media file with the proper codecs in order to be used by other software.
