Information on Gardenia Bushes

Gardenias are flowering, evergreen bushes that grow best in southern locations since they are sensitive to cold. Gardenias are known for their strong aroma and large white flowers. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Planting and Watering

    • Gardenias planted outdoors should be spaced 3 to 6 feet apart in the spring or fall. They should be watered well at least once a week.

    Fertilizing

    • Gardenias should be fertilized monthly with an acidic fertilizer during the growing season to ensure blooming.

    Pruning and Propogation

    • Gardenias should not be pruned until after they have flowered and then minimally to shape the bush. The plants can be propagated by removing a clipping and placing it either in water or in loose well-watered soil.

    Lighting

    • While gardenias are tropical plants and love sunlight, they do need some light shade, especially after watering.

    Diseases

    • Some diseases common to gardenias are canker, leaf spot, mold, mildew and bud drop.
