The Effects of Dexatrim With Other Meds

Dexatrim is marketed as a weight-loss supplement and is available over the counter. Various forms include Max, Max2O and Natural. It is not approved by the FDA for weight loss.

  1. History

    • Dexatrim originally included phenylpropanoline, a medication once used to treat colds. After phenylpropanoline was found to be a cause of hemorrhagic stroke in women, it was replaced by ephedra. Ephedra has since been banned for sale in over-the-counter supplements, so it is no longer used in Dexatrim.

    Ingredients

    • Dexatrim contains vitamins B6 and E, manganese, zinc, magnesium, phospohorous, calcium and pantothenic acid. Some versions also include caffeine, guarana and other stimulants that may interact with medications.

    Guarana

    • Guarana may interact with many medications, including stimulants-- amphetamines and phenylpropanolamine--diet pills, water pills and birth-control medicine. Guarana acts as a diuretic and increases the effects of other stimulants, which can lead to dehydration or cardiovascular problems such as hypertention and tachycardia.

    Caffeine

    • Caffeine may increase the effects of stimulant medications, which can lead to cardiovascular problems. Caffeine may also increase the level of medications in the blood stream, which can lead to other side effects.

    Other Ingredients

    • Consult with your pharmacy regarding other ingredients in Dexatrim. Many ingredients are contraindicated with certain medications.
