UTI & Yeast Infection

Urinary tract infections and yeast infections are common conditions caused by bacteria that enter the genital area.

UTIs

According to medicinenet.com, urinary tract infections (UTIs) occur when bacteria, most often from the digestive tract, adhere to the opening of the urethra---the tube that allows urine to travel from the bladder. UTIs are the second most common infection of the human body, and strike women more often than men.

UTI Symptoms

Some people with UTIs are asymptomatic, while others may feel burning pain when urinating, pressure above the pubic bone for women or fullness in the rectum for men, and an extreme urge to urinate, despite passing only a small amount of urine.

Yeast Infections

Yeast---also known as Candida---is a natural part of the body's intestinal flora, kept in check by the "good" bacteria in your system. An increase in yeast production can result in an infection. Antibiotics, for example, can kill the good bacteria, allowing yeast to increase.

Yeast Infection Symptoms

Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection are odor, itching, rash, pelvic pain and vaginal discharge, reports medicinenet.com.

Treatments

UTIs are treated with a short course of antibiotics, which can lead to a yeast infection. Yeast infections can be treated with anti-fungal creams, available over-the-counter, or oral prescription medications in tablet form.
