Zoladex Side Effects

Zoladex is the brand name used for the generic drug goserelin. Administered by injection every one or three months, the synthetic hormone is mainly prescribed to treat breast cancer in women nearing menopause, endometriosis and prostate cancer.

Function

Zoladex interferes with the production of estradiol, a hormone that may encourage cancer cells to grow in women, possibly reducing the amount to a postmenopausal level. The drug also prevents men from producing the hormone testosterone.

Common Side Effects

Patients taking Zoladex routinely experience bone pain, headaches, hot flashes, swollen or tender breasts, lowered sex drive and weight gain. None of the symptoms are urgent.

Moderate Side Effects

Users should consult their doctor if they develop increased body hair, moodiness, nausea, tiredness, vaginal dryness or vomiting that persists or grows severe.

Severe Side Effects

Prompt medical attention is necessary if breathing difficulty, chest pain, chills, fast heartbeat, fever or painful urination occur.

Female Users

Women who take Zoladex should expect to stop menstruating and consult a doctor if they don't. They may also experience fewer or less severe side effects if they undergo hormone replacement therapy simultaneously.
